I Capture the Castle

  • Dec. 30th, 2009 at 2:25 PM
I've been trying to get this tattoo for years, and last week it finally happened!  I'm so thrilled with it.  It's a quote from Dodie Smith's I Capture the Castle and speaks such volumes to me.
There is only one page left to write on. I will fill it with words of only one syllable.  )

a week in County Clare / Ireland

  • Dec. 30th, 2009 at 2:44 PM
hi everyone,

I'm planning a week in Ireland at the end of March 2010.
It's going to be my 5th time in Ireland, but so far I've only discovered the east coast, Dublin, Wicklow, etc. This time I'll head for the west, County Clare is my destination.
I plan to spend some days in Ennis as my place to start from.
Now I would like to have the opinion from those of you who have been there before. As the first time I'm in that area, should I use those day-trips that are offered to visit Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands, The Burren, etc, or should I go and discover it myself, like rent a car or something? What's your experience with those day tours, do they offer enough information and time to really enjoy going to those places, is it worth the money?
I remember my first time in Ireland, starting from Dublin, I made use of the day-tours to Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough, etc, and it was a great way to see those places for the first time and have a guide who explained the historical background of the places.
The second time in Ireland though, I planned things myself, and I found places aside from the "official tourist routes" that were fascinating to discover. Both ways had their advantages.

So, to make this short: how did you discover County Clare / The Burren / Cliffs of Moher / Loop Head / Aran Islands etc, what was the best way for you? I'm open to every opinion and grateful for tips :-)

thanks.

Blame it on the Pop!

Live Music and Freakish Coincidences

  • Dec. 30th, 2009 at 4:03 AM
I saw two incredible bands perform live tonight: Local H and Electric Six. Local H is one of my very favorite bands of all time and Electric Six is one of my favorites of those I'm still still getting familiar with.

a question..

  • Dec. 30th, 2009 at 3:07 AM
i know this isn't necessarily a literary tattoo, BUT it's a quote from carl sagan's cosmos series.

i want to get 'we're made of star stuff' on my wrist in a serif 'book' font.

now i've been debating between getting 'we're made of star stuff.' or just 'star stuff.' and i'm not quite sure which one to go for.. or whether to throw in the period.

any opinions or suggestions or anything?

tia!

edit: also! if i do go with 'we're made of star stuff' how should i break it up on my wrist, i don't want to go all the way around with it.

Some questions...

  • Dec. 30th, 2009 at 1:33 AM
Hey ladies, I've got some questions... I've read and read here and on other websites, but I'd still like to ask, just to be sure.

1. My insertion experience was great. Like zero pain, totally fine afterward, no cramping. Now a week later, I get a few cramps here and there. This is normal, right?
2. I have a Mirena, and it was inserted about a week after my period. The doctor said to wait until after my first follow up to have sex without backup protection, but I've read I only have to wait 7 days. Should I listen to her just to be sure?
3. Could anyone give me some clear symptoms of expulsion? I tend to get a little paranoid because I (as my next question will address) have issues with strings and am cramping a little. I have yet to feel any real pain and I've only spotted, no increased flow, and I can have sex pain-free, so I think I'm safe... but just so I know what to look for?
4. Strings, strings, strings... I am failing at this string business. I've tried squatting, standing, sitting, looking in a mirror... I think I found them once (I say I think because at this point maybe I imagined it), but haven't seen them since. Advice?

Thanks!

party music!

  • Dec. 29th, 2009 at 10:57 PM
I just wanted to share with you all a site I discovered that has some pretty fun party playlists on it.

www.fratmusic.com

It's been having some difficulties lately, but it seems to be working fine now. It's just a simple little site with a couple of different party playlists, from techno and trance to hip-hop and rap, with even a classic rock playlist.

This is a pretty gem of a site, especially when I want to listen to a fun variety but I'm not at my computer or have my ipod available. So enjoy :)

It's especially useful ever since myspace bought out imeem.com and obliterated all my playlists over there. Bad myspace, baaaad.

p.s. also, I just wanna mention to all those who don't know, that I'm doing a song-a-week type journal, where I post a new song every week (ideally I would be posting every day, but alas, life gets the better of me sometimes). So also feel free to stop by my journal and/or friend me if you're in the mood to discover some new music :)

Hey,
I'm going on a trip to Italy with my mom, grandmother, and aunt in May. My mom & grandma have never been abroad before. I have been several times, and my aunt has been once to Europe and to Mexico & some islands...
Anyway, we are going with Trafalgar Tours.
We chose to do a tour because my mom really wants someone to take us places and have it all done for us as she doesn't know Europe at all.
I was just wondering, has anyone had any experiences with Trafalgar?

My Grandma who is going to be 81, and who is very slow and fragile (but in good health otherwise) is worried she won't be able to keep up. The tour pace says "Leisurely." How slow is "leuisurely" if you've been?

Thanks!

The Rev is dead

  • Dec. 29th, 2009 at 10:39 AM
One of my best friends just emailed me at work asking if I'd heard the news -- Avenged Sevenfold's drummer, The Rev, is dead at age 28. He was found yesterday and so far appears to have died of natural causes, according to this article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34617808/ns/entertainment-music/

Avenged Sevenfold is one of my favorite bands and is one of a handful that hold a special place with me because they completely and utterly won me over after when assumed they were lame in the beginning. I don't know him personally, of course, but The Rev seemed to be such a fun and good guy on top of being a fantastic drummer with a distinct voice -- I have no idea how they will ever get that back.

This crushes me for my own selfish reasons, having not seen them live and now not being able to see the linup I had been looking forward to. And then there's the lack of his vocals that will be missing from future A7X releases. In any case, best wishes to the rest of the band and those close to The Rev.

Where do you find a guy who can drum and sing like he does at about 1:35?

Greece

  • Dec. 29th, 2009 at 9:37 AM
My friend and I are hoping to go on a short trip to Greece for a week or two next year, but we're having trouble narrowing it down to decide exactly where to go so I'm hoping some people on here might be able to offer some advice. My ultimate nightmare would be a holiday in a place with English bars, sunburnt people lying by a pool all day, drunk Brits and hotel entertainment (I imagine most people on here will feel the same!), and I know some parts of Greece are like this so I want to know where to avoid! I've done some research online and in books, but they mostly want to make the places sound good so it can be difficult to tell what it's really going to be like.
I'm the sort of person who buys a cheap flight, stays in a youth hostel or very cheap self catering place and wants to avoid other tourists as much as possible when I go on holiday, and have done a few long backpacking trips in the past, while my friend has never done anything other than package holidays to hotels (although she's happy for me to organise it all separately if that's the best option). We don't want to be too far off the beaten track as we won't have the money to hire a car and we don't speak more than the very minimal basics of Greek, and we're on a strict budget so we need to be able to get a cheapish flight and accommodation/ a cheap package (if such things exist to non-hideous tourist destinations!), so ideally we could do with finding somewhere that has things to do within easy reach and has a few places to eat out etc, but isn't built up and full of tourists. Can anyone help??

Paris Hostels

  • Dec. 28th, 2009 at 10:59 PM
I am going to Paris in late March, early April for a week and was wondering if anyone would could recommend a centrally located hostel. I am hoping to stay around the Louvre or the Seine.

Thanks.

i don't think this kind of post against the rules... i read them, and everything seems to be in order. let me know if something isn't cool.

since you folks like to discover and talk about new music, i thought i'd give this a shot :) my name is chantilly. i'm a singer-songwriter, and i've made an album. all i want is for people to listen to it, and i'd be honored if some of you would check it out. people have compared what i do to:

* she & him
* cat power
* jenny lewis
* feist
* other good people

right now you can download the whole shebang at http://chantillysongs.bandcamp.com (free!!), and find out a little more about it/ me at myspace.com/chantillysongs. i have absolutely no big budget, no pr company, no label. i do this all myself, and am relying on people who like to discover new music to get the word out ;)

this is what the cover art looks like:

W138_Chantilly_scrapbk

you might find the message x-posted in a few other places, so sorry if it shows up on your friends page more than once. i hope i don't come off too overly self-promoting, but i'm sure you can understand how hard it is for a fledgling artist to get any exposure these days. i'd be glad to talk with anybody who has something to say about it :)

thanks so much for reading :) i hope some of you like what we've done. xoxo.

thinking of getting the Mirena IUD

  • Dec. 28th, 2009 at 11:28 AM
okaaay, so i'm sure this is going to be added to a long list of anxiety-riddled posts in the existence of this community, but i'm at my wit's end with no one to really talk to, and i need some solid advice!

i guess i'll start by saying i live in Alberta, Canada. i've tried three different types of HBC before thinking of resorting to the Mirena IUD: had to stop nuvaring because of persistent yeast infections, alesse gave me migraines, and yasmin made me gain weight. my family doctor apparently prescribes the Mirena IUD quite often to her female patients, and suggested i try it. she told me it would probably be a good idea (since i have a very sensitive cervix, and need to take ativan before pap smears) to go to a women's health clinic in my area where they'll insert the IUD after giving me laughing gas to numb some of the pain.

so...not only am i pretty scared of the pain/discomfort associated with the insertion, i have all of these "what if?" questions regarding the duration of my pain afterward, possible yeast infections again, migraines...you NAME it. i know that the side effects of IUDs are subjective and that i have no way of guessing what they'll be until i have it inserted, but i'd like a LITTLE more information before i shell out upwards of 200$-300$ for something that will only cause me pain.

so...are there any other ladies in here with the same sensitive cervix/bad HBC history who have gotten the Mirena IUD and are happy with it? if so, i'd like some info on how long recovery time took, etc...also, does anyone live in the alberta area who could let me know how much the Mirena IUD really is? thanks.

i've also never been pregnant or had children before.

First Tattoo =D

  • Dec. 28th, 2009 at 7:25 AM

Hey everyone! First time poster for my first tattoo, long-time book/quotation lover!

I've always wanted a tattoo, but since I am currently under my parents' roof, the tattoo issue has been brought up, discussed, and ultimately denied countless time. My father, who would have fits when I dyed my hair black and wore dark nail polish to match isn't the one with the issue-- his argument is that I'm an adult now, it's my body; and even though I'm under their roof for the time being, it is only temporary. My mother, who has always encouraged me to express myself in anyway I felt comfortable has a problem with it. While I was on vacation this last summer with some girlfriends, I got a facial piercing, and since, the argument has turned less into an argument, and more into a very possible maybe.

My 20th birthday is in 12 days, and I am more certain than ever that I want a tattoo-- I have had ideas floating around in my head for ages, and the thought that I might actually get one is driving me wild!

Of course I find myself wanting something meaningful. I haven't had the easiest life, and for about three-fours years after a traumatic experience, I self mutilated and had even tried to end my life. So I hope that the fact that I want something I can actively look at, that also covers up scars isn't lost on anyone.

I was thinking that either of these would work wonderfully for where I am, the inspiration I am need in of everyday, because everyday is a struggle;

The word 'Infinite' from "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" or the phrase "raison d'être" the phrase "reason for being," in French; inspired by the book "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"-- the placement would be on the inside of my left wrist. And if it is at all possible, I would love for the wording to be in white ink instead of black. That way, it is subtle, and always very private and precious.

What makes this special for me is that I would have to have ti done in a cross between the font "Windsong" and my late Grandmother's handwriting, which is actually very similar. I credit, in many ways, her death as the instance that gave me strength to continue living.

As this is a very long post already, I won't go into it here-- but once I get the tattoo, I can include it if anyone is interested in hearing it.

Any thoughts? Opinions? Criticisms? I am looking for all the advice I can get!

Thank you, this is greatly appreciated!
